Texas Rancher Turned Artist, Painting the Life He's Lived
Evoking the color, character, and quiet beauty of the West one scene at a time
I’m a fifth generation Clay County rancher, born in Nocona, Texas, and I have lived in North Texas all my life. My art journey started as a fourth grade student competing in UIL ‘Picture Memory’ competitions in which I was exposed to all the great masters. in 1991, I began taking lessons with Steve Grey, a local artist for 2 years. Over the next 30 years, my production was sporadic - work prevented me from painting as much as I would have liked. I was more into visiting galleries with my wife who is also an artist, to enjoy the different styles and techniques of masters, collecting a few pieces along the way.
As I began a transition from my ‘desk job’ as a financial advisor into retirement in 2023, I started painting again. I’ve been working primarily in oils and pastels, but recently started working in watercolors and acrylics. My first inspiration was Nicolai Fechin, along with impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. Contemporary artist that influence me are Louisa McElwain, John Cook, Michael Workman, Albin Veselka, Tim Oliver and Australians Colley Whisson and Richard Musgrave-Evans.
I hope my art conveys a love of color and the character of cowboy life and the wonderful West Texas landscapes and sunsets that allows the viewer to complete the picture with their imagination. And by the way....welcome to West Texas, y'all gonna love it!
